How to Find a Therapist on the Main Line

Finding a psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist, or life coach in Greater Philadelphia can be confusing. (Do you want to know more about the difference between these professions? Click here to learn more.) Sure, it's simple to scroll through a list of therapists on pscyhologytoday.com, but how do you know which one would be best for you?

Maybe you've sat in a therapy chair before, but you and the therapist didn't "click." Maybe he or she barely spoke, letting you talk and talk without offering any guidance or support. Maybe the therapist chimed in with his or her thoughts, but there was a disconnect; the feedback wasn't useful and you weren't making any progress. Regardless of the reason, therapy didn't feel effective.

Consider that therapy itself may not be the problem, but that you and your therapist were poorly matched for each other. Many studies have shown that the rapport between the therapist and client is instrumental in creating more successful therapy outcomes.

Here are some things to consider when selecting a therapist:

Specialties - Does the therapist specialize in the issues you are facing? You would not want to see a optometrist if you have stomach pain. Not all medical doctors can take care of all conditions. The same is true in mental health. Review a potential therapist's website to determine if he or she has experience working with others with your concerns.

Location - If the therapist's office is a 45 minute drive from where you live or work, consider how well it will fit into your life. Therapy is only effective if you are able to make the sessions. Select a therapist who is close by so that you can reduce how frequently you need to cancel and how often you incur cancellation fees.

Fees and Insurance- For most of us, money is a limited resource. Select a therapist that you can afford so that you can attend regularly and make the most out of your sessions. Decide whether you want to see a therapist that takes your insurance or if you want to use out of network benefits or pay out of pocket.

If you are looking for help with anxiety, self-esteem, or navigating complicated relationships, please read more about what I do here. I would be happy to speak with you for a complimentary 15 minute session so that you can see if we "click." Feel free to reach out either by phone (484-222-6436) or email (drfask@fasktherapy.com). If we don't "click," I'd be happy to refer you to some other therapists in the Philadelphia area that may work for your needs.
