Demystifying the Phone Consultation

A while ago, I addressed fears about having a first therapy session. But in many practices, including my own, there is a step before the first session: a phone consultation. In order to alleviate any anxiety one might have about this very first step, I thought it might be useful to share exactly what an initial consultation with me is like. Typically, I will begin by asking what is prompting the call. Often the individuals I speak with will use this as an opportunity to share their recent life circumstances and/or recent emotional experiences. I often ask some follow-up questions, so that I can gain a better understanding of the situation. If I feel comfortable that I would be in a position to help you, I will let you know that I would be happy to meet with you. I will often summarize what I imagine might be some goals for treatment to make sure that we are on the same page. If you are still interested in working with me, then, next, I usually discuss logistical details, such as setting up the appointment time, my office location, and finances. I am also happy to answer any questions you may have about therapy or working with me. If, however, I do not think I would be well suited to address your concerns, I will usually offer to refer you to someone else whom I suspect would be better suited for your needs. This is absolutely essential, as my top priority is to ensure that you are receiving the best possible care, even if that care is not coming from me. And that's all there is to it! If you're interested in giving it a try, give me a call! My number is 484-222-6436.
